Breakthrough technology reduces staff injury risk

The use of bollards for security and traffic management is being enhanced by a breakthrough in bollard technology that reduces the chance of workplace injuries.
Image Bollards has developed the Dugite Premium counterweighted bollard which doesn't require manual lifting, creating vast improvements in occupational health and safety standards.
Managing Director Tony Scott said he recognised the need for a convenient no-lift bollard after many reports of injuries due to the lifting and lowering of heavy bollards.
"Traditional bollards weigh up to 19kg and the Worksafe code of practice says the risk of back injury increases when loads over 16kg are handled from positions other than seated," Mr Scott said. "In fact, Worksafe are considering reducing the safe lifting limit in the code to 12kg."
"The new premium bollards are counterweighted requiring no lifting, and simply the push of a finger to lower to the ground."
Based in WA, Image Bollards produce, supply, install and maintain a wide range of security and parking products for many diverse applications.
One of the company's clients, the University of Western Australia (UWA), is addressing safety concerns about the older style bollards by replacing these with the Dugite Premium counterweighted bollards.
UWA UniPark supervisor Graeme Nichols said the decision to replace the bollards was made after one staff member injured his shoulder lifting a heavy bollard.
"Our existing bollards are very heavy, particularly in winter when they can fill up with water," Mr Nichols said. "So we have asked Image Bollards to replace all bollards throughout the university."
The counterweighted bollards have the added security benefit of an option of different keys for each bollard in a convenient standard door key size.
Image Bollards are one of five Australian companies that produce retractable bollards but the innovative counterweighted design is unique in the industry. The company has on-going contracts to supply bollards and speed humps to many large international companies including McDonalds, Target, Liquorland, Multiplex and Holiday Inn.
Upcoming projects include supplying products from the company's extensive range to The Arena Joondalup complex, City of Perth carparks, the WA Army Museum, John Hughes Victoria Park and Bunbury Subaru. |
