FireCLAD™ Wall System is 25% cheaper, claims Victorian builder

A new industrial fire-rated wall system adopted by a builder in Victoria is claimed to cut construction costs by more that a quarter.
Dandenong Garage and Outdoor Centre director Paul Robinson said the FireCLAD™ exterior steel wall system proved to be over 25% cheaper than other alternatives the first time his company had used the system.
“We build an extension to an existing factory which needed to be fire-rated along one b oundary and between the extension and the building,” Mr Robinson said.
His company has since won two more jobs using the FireCLAD™ exterior wall system.
This system meets firewall regulations for indusrtial sheds of up to 20000 square metres, which covers 80% of the market.
The FireCLAD™ exterior wall system was developed by Boral and BlueScope Steel.
The construction method is designed for industrial fire-rated walls, to overcome cramped building conditions and allow industrial sheds to be build right up to boundary lines.
The system has been designed for the projects including Class7 and 8 buildings where the building Code required fire resistance of 60 or 90 minutes to fire attack from outside the building.
The cobined weight of the BlueScope COLORBOND® prepainted steel cladding, the steel girts made from BlueScope GALVASPAN® steel and Boral 13mm FireSTOP™ plasterboard is one eighth the weight of some alternative materials.
“Using the lightweight FireCLAD™ system we built on the full length of the site boundary – 45 metres long by 6 metres high – and this wall was lifted in one piece,” Mr Robinson said.
Craning the prefabricated wall panels into place saved time and money.
Mr Robinson said the system’s light weight combined with its inherent flexural strength meant the possibilities for using the construction system were extensive.
“When lifting long lengths with multiple cranes, the system easily tolerated any inconsistencies in the cranes lifting speeds,” he said.
“Using alternative standard trade products, we would have been required to build the two adjoining walls three metres away from any boundary.”
