| Boral Bricks ‘Escura Smooth Face' at UWS |
The award-winning New Teaching Building at University of Western Sydney’s Parramatta campus is a striking case of passive design to enhance thermal, acoustic and ultimately, learning performance.
Deep cavity brick walls using Boral’s Escura Smooth Face clay bricks, effective solar screening, a vented fly roof and extended eaves all work together to transform the 5,300sqm site into a state-of-the-art learning facility that houses four tiered lecture theatres, 24 classrooms and six computer laboratories amongst other amenities.
“The choice of material was paramount in producing thermal and acoustically controlled environments that would enhance the learning process,” said Hassel Project Architect, Luke Johnson.
“With the number of students moving through en masse, we also required a robust product, without compromising on aesthetic appeal. In natural clay that is virtually age-proof, Boral’s Escura Smooth Face bricks were ideal.”
The striking 80 metre western wall features colourful brick banding in Red and Cream using a corbelling technique. The refined ceramic-look finish is colour consistent from skin to core and will never fade.
