| THERMASHIELD – PUTTING CLIMATE CONTROL TOGETHER |
High-performance windows and doors, like Thermashield by Trend Windows & Doors, assist in reducing annual energy bills, lessening peak heating and cooling loads. This means households can select smaller heating or cooling systems, which is better for the environment.
In most climates, savings can be improved even further by substituting glass with a near-invisible low-emissivity (or low-e) coating. However, while a low-e coating on simple single glazing reduces that part of the heat transfer, it does not reduce conductive and convective heat flow. A much better solution is to reduce all three forms of heat transfer. To do this, an insulating glass unit (IGU, or double-glazing) is ideal.
The most common filling between the panes of an IGU is dry air. The narrowest air gap used is 6 mm, but wider gaps (10–20 mm) will improve performance. For even greater performance, the IGU should have a low-e coating on at least one pane and argon gas fill between the panes. A frame with a low thermal conductivity and low air infiltration system will also complement the glazing system. |
