Innovative projects win North Qld Architecture Awards

Six innovative new architectural projects in North Queensland have picked up seven architecture commendations at the prestigious Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) 2008 Regional Architecture Awards.
The RAIA Architecture Awards honour excellence in all areas of architecture and are the profession’s most prestigious awards. Twelve projects from as far north as Ingham, south to Sarina and west to Mt Isa were entered in this year’s North Queensland/Mackay and Witsunday regional awards, with the six commendation recipients now proceeding to the State Architecture Awards in Brisbane on 25 July.
Two public architecture projects were awarded commendations and will now contend the State’s top FDG Stanley Award for Public Architecture – the multi-events stadium Buchanan Park Redevelopment at Mt Isa by Architectural Practice Academy and the Tony Ireland Stadium at Thuringowa Central by Cox Rayner Architects.
In the heritage category, the jury awarded a commendation to the restoration of the 130-year-old Sacred Heart Cathedral at Townsville by IA Group Architects.
An innovative house at Horseshoe Bay by Troppo Architects, the Wallaby Way House, was awarded two commendations for its unique design – being the only project to win a commendation for single housing and the sole sustainable architecture commendation.
Commendations were also presented to two multiple housing projects in Townsville and on Magnetic Island – the One Bright Point development by Fairweather Proberts Architects Pty Ltd on Magnetic Island and Yarrawanga Terraces Stage 01 in Townsville by Phorm/Barrett Architects (joint venture).
