Recent studies by the CSIRO indicate that indoor air quality can be up to 4 times worse than outdoor air. Generally this problem can be attributed to the off-gassing from increased use of synthetic materials eg carpets, vinyls, paints etc, coupled with the reduced ventilation in more energy efficient buildings. It is estimated that, in new or recently decorated buildings, approximately 70% of the indoor air pollutants emanate from the paints used.
In Australia there is no legislation covering this area but APAS (Australian Paint Approval Schemes) within the Dept. of Industry, Science and Resources, has set out guidelines on VOC limits for coatings.
These requirements are detailed on the Rockcote EcoStyle Fact Sheet. Rockcote EcoStyle products have been independently tested and hold zero VOC status.
Under current APAS guidelines colourants containing up to 40% solvents may be used and do not count in assessing the VOC content of the tinted paint. Rockcote has elected to import specialised colourants which are themselves water based and have a zero VOC content.
