Bradford champions sustainability through its products and processes
Wednesday 1st August 2007

The building industry as a whole is becoming increasingly conscious about sustainability, and it is now critical for architects and builders to feel comfortable with the knowledge they are using environmentally sound products. With this in mind, CSR Bradford Insulation has released a comprehensive brochure with information on the sustainable manufacturing of its energy efficient product range.

CSR Bradford Insulation has established itself as a leader of sustainability, offering highly sustainable building products that are manufactured using recyclable and energy efficient techniques. Now, with recent improvements in the manufacturing processes, the sustainability of Bradford Insulation products has been further extended.

Tom Newton, Marketing Manager, CSR Bradford Insulation says: “Every day, Bradford contributes to the sustainability of housing by encouraging builders and specifiers to insulate to the highest possible standards using Bradford products.”

“In addition, developments in the manufacturing of Bradford products have provided an even greater contribution to sustainability for the building industry,” Newton continues.

Newton concludes: “The way forward for sustainable building practices is to ensure that the manufacturing process is as sustainable as the product itself.”

Recent developments in Bradford’s manufacturing processes include:
  • Reduced air emissions: Ingleburn glasswool insulation plant utilises best available technology to reduce air emissions to levels that are among the lowest in the world;
  • Recycled water: glasswool and rockwool plants recycle all water used in the manufacturing process, reducing water consumption and eliminating waste water effluent discharges. Bradford has a long-term goal of zero waste manufacturing processes;
  • Recycled content: glasswool is manufactured from at least 50 per cent and up to 80 per cent recycled glass. Our rockwool is manufactured from up to 20 per cent blast furnace slag – a by-product of the iron and steel-making industry. Recycling saves on landfill space, reduces demand on virgin resources, and reduces the amount of energy used;
  • Packaging and transportation: insulation is packed in a highly compressed state, meaning that more insulation can be shipped in each truck – streamlining transportation and saving energy in the process. In addition, the packaging is made from recyclable polyethylene packaging; and
  • Use and re-use: rockwood scrap generated in the manufacturing process is efficiently recycled, and will soon be able to receive rockwool for demolition waste for recycling into new rockwool insulation products.
Bradford products are even more sustainable when considering the products are fire and corrosion resistant, and the glasswool, rockwool, and reflective foil laminates have an ‘Ozone Depleting Potential’ of zero. In addition, over 70 years of research has shown the products to be safe from an occupational health and safety perspective.

Insulation contributes to sustainable housing by maintaining thermal efficiency. Ensuring the thermal efficiency of buildings reduces the amount of energy required to maintain a comfortable environment, thereby decreasing the amount of energy contributing to greenhouse gas production.

Thermal efficiency is achieved by using insulation either during the construction of new buildings, or by retro-fitting existing buildings. Glasswool and rockwool insulation products can save 12 times as much energy in their first year in place as the energy used to produce them*. Over their lifetime, this amounts to a huge saving in energy, meaning less pollution and fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Bradford has been long involved in energy efficiency solutions having manufactured insulation in Australia since 1934.
