Specification
In the absence of specific product standards, designers have several options when specifying purlins:
- Nominate the purlins by size and manufacturer to the exclusion of all others
- Specify by size and manufacturer and allow equivalent alternatives subject to the approval of the designer
- Specify the major dimensions and properties such as:
- depth, flange width, base metal thickness, yield strength, protective coating mass of section and leave the choice of manufacturer to the contractor.
- Selection of the correct coating weight is critical to the long term corrosion performance of the purlin.
Purlins made from GALVASPAN® Steel are available in two coating weights. These are Z350and Z450.
The choice of which coating class to specify is dependant on the environment the purlin is used. For example, most applications not subject to unusually corrosive conditions will see Z350 giving an adequate service life. However in more corrosive applications, Z450 coating class may be appropriate. Post-painting may be required in certain applications eg. Municipal Reservoirs.
