BAMBOO FLOORING
Install, Maintain :
Index |
|
There are 3 methods of installation:
- Floated over underlay on most sub-floors
- Secret Nailed & Glued on ply, yellow-tongue or chipboard
- Direct stick (glued down) on concrete or on ply sheeting
Pre-Installation:
Bamboo flooring in the southern states of Australia must be allowed to acclimatize to the surroundings in which it is to be installed.
Because of the high humidity in northern Australia Bamboo flooring can be installed as soon as it is delivered. In the southern states our humidity level is much lower so the boards should acclimatize for 10 to 14 days prior to installation to allow the moisture content to escape and stabilize to the surroundings in which the boards are to be installed.
The sub-floor on which the boards are to be installed must be clean, free of oil and any adhesive residue. All sub-floors must be level; the acceptable tolerance to Australian standards is 3mm over a 3-metre radius. If the levels do not meet this standard a timber sub-floor should be sanded and a concrete slab should have a levelling compound applied to meet the standard for tolerance.
- Floating Method - This method of installation is achieved by laying a dense foam underlay over the existing sub-floor then applying a thin glue line on the tongue and groove then affixing the boards together. The underlay assists with noise reduction and in the case of high-rise developments an acoustic underlay is required.
- Secret Nailed Method - Planks should be started square with the room and parallel to its longest dimension by positioning with a chalk line. Make sure the starter rows are firmly in place by wedging or face nailing then nailed above the tongue at a 45-degree angle to the face.
- Direct Stick Method - Planks can be glue directly to a timber or concrete sub-floor. If the installation is to be over a new concrete slab the sub-floor must be sealed. This can be by either applying a waterproofing moisture resistant membrane or by glueing ply sheeting to the sub-flooring and then glue to this base.
Ideally the new flooring should be left overnight or at least 12 hours to allow the glue to dry before heavy use of the floor.

Regardless of how the floor has been finished, there are certain steps that must be taken to maintain the beauty of all types of floors. The following are some excellent guidelines for protecting and maintaining your investment:
General Maintenance
- Blot up spills and spots on your Bamboo or timber floor and dry it up immediately by using damp mop then dry with a clean soft cloth or towel.
- Maintain your Bamboo floor as you would any hardwood floor. The key to your floors long life and good looks is periodic cleaning and refinishing when necessary.
- Every floor must be dust mopped, with a cleaning vacuum brush head or swept with a soft bristle broom, as often as necessary to remove grit and dust from the surface. Walking on sandy or dirty floors is the fastest way to damage the finish and this applies to either hardwood timber or bamboo flooring.
- Regularly clean the floor with a dust mop, soft bristled broom soft bristled vacuum cleaner, or a wood floor mop kit
