RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS & PROCEDURE FOR FIXING VERSATECH MOULDINGS
The following installation summary has been broken down into individual steps in order to provide detailed explanations of each one. On actual site installations, these steps should be carried out in unison. Keeping in mind your overall objective.
CONDITIONS:
- Approved glues, sealants and epoxy resins must be used at all times. These products have been tested and are approved for use by Austech. Austech reserves the right to add or delete from this list of products recommended herein for use with Versatech.
- Climate conditions can seriously affect you application. Always glue to a clean, dry surface and be sure to seal all edges the same day. You don't know what the weather will be like tomorrow!
- Versatech is primed with a high quality etch primer ready for the application of any of the numerous finish coatings that can be applied. All paint used should be good quality, high impact resistant external grade. It is recommended that when painting, a longhaired coarse roller be used for your finish coats. You should remember to treat Versatech like any other quality building product.
- Although Versatech is almost totally resistant to moisture, we still recommend that the sub-structure be waterproofed prior to your installation.
ALL EDGES, JOINTS AND RAW ENDS MUST BE SEALED AS SPECIFIED HEREIN.
TOOLS REQUIRED
- Tape measure
- Utility knife
- Sharp handsaw - medium to fine tooth. (For larger jobs with smaller profiles, an electric combination mitre saw may save time).
- Combination Square
- Pencil
- 75mm Broad knife
- Caulking Gun
- Nails and screws where necessary
- Bolster or chisel where necessary
ADHESIVES
CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE: There are several on the market but only those recommended as suitable for use with polystyrene should be used. We recommend Bear Stronghold or Sika Bond.
SEALING VERSATECH TO SURFACE
After moulding has been adhered to surface, apply Sika Flex 1A or PRO Z HP to all edges and smooth over with your finger ensuring coverage to both surfaces.
Do not leave gaps when you Sika Flex edges (moisture may get in).
Do not apply Sika Flex to external faces of butt joints or mitres, except when installing expansion joint or consumption joints.
JOINING VERSATECH MOULDINGS
Mixing epoxy resin: - West System epoxy is a two-part resin applied over butt joints, mitres and raw ends. In a disposable container mix 5 parts resin to 1 part hardener. Don't mix too much as this product has a short pot life. Then add enough 403 micro-fibre blend to the mix to thicken to desirable consistency. The mix should not run or sag when applied over joints
Apply mix over joint to ensure all gaps are filled, covering approximately 30mm each side of joint.
For larger mouldings exposed to direct sunlight, we recommend a second coat of West System over joints, Versatech is then ready to paint.
EXPANSION JOINTS
On larger jobs we recommend an expansion joint approximately every ten metres. Seal raw ends of moulding to be joined with West System epoxy prior to your installation. To the end of one length apply a continuos 10mm bead of Sika Flex 1A 10mm in from the perimeter of the profile. When installing, press ends together and ensure Sika Flex 1A has adhered to both surfaces. We recommend that expansion joint be 5mm wide.
Clean all excess Sika Flex from face of moulding.
DO NOT apply West System epoxy to face of expansion joint.
SEALANT: SIKA FLEX 1A or PRO Z HP
JOINING: WEST SYSTEM EPOXY RESIN
105 RESIN
205/6 HARDENER
403 MICRO FIBRE BLEND
NOTE: Sika Flex 1A or PRO Z HP is both an adhesive and sealant, and when applied correctly is your primary adhesive.
CUTTING VERSATECH
Use a combination square and mark surface of moulding to desired length, then cut to your lines with a sharp handsaw.
Installation Tips
- Always measure moulding on the surface being fixed to wall.
- On larger mouldings, first make a small cut into all faces of the moulding, creating a guide for the saw blade.
- Always start from internal mitres, then external mitres, and fill in with straight cuts. This should make it easier to achieve good mitres.
ADHESIVE FIXING TO STRUCTURE
Versatech can be applied to several external grade materials, ie. cement based sheeting, rendered block/brick, face brick and concrete panels. We recommend that surfaces be flat sheeted, rather than attempt to adhere direct to stud work or furring channel.
Ensure surface is clean and dry.
Chalk lines where required.
Apply 20mm dabs of adhesive for approximately 5 or 6 seconds, then quickly jerk moulding from surface. Leave off approximately 4 to 8 minutes, depending on weather conditions.
REMEMBER THAT THE SIKA FLEX 1A OR PRO Z HP IS YOUR WATERPROOFING SEALANT AS WELL AS THE PRIMARY ADHESIVE. THE CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE WILL HOLD VERSATECH MOULDING IN POSITION UNTIL THE SIKA FLEX HAS CURED.
Installation Tips
- To achieve a "flow" for your installation, prepare 4 to 5 lengths using the above method, then go back to the first length and start the refit.
- When refitting lengths, ensure you apply adhesive to all butt joints and mitres.
