Architectural Specifications
|
Abbreviated specifications covering normal job requirements follow For roofing uses, they are not intended to be used with roofs exposed to chemical discharge. For additional information and technical assistance, contact the regional sales office, shown on back page.
PART 1: General
1.1 Scope - Specify to meet project requirements.
1.2 Qualifications
All materials, unless otherwise indicated, shall be manufactured by Owens Corning Co. for one of its licensees, and shall be installed in accordance with its current printed directions. Products shall be manufactured with HCFCs which are 95% less damaging to the ozone layer than past formulations that contained CFC's
1.3 Delivery and storage of materials Materials
Materials shall be delivered in their original unopened units, stored off the ground, protected from direct sunlight with a fight-coloured opaque polyethylene film and ventilated to pre vent excess temperature. Damaged or deteriorated materials shall be removed from the premises.
PART 2: Execution
2.1 Insulation application
CURTAIN WALL
FOAMULAR-METRIC panels are non-structural and must be installed over or within adequately braced curtain wall framing systems.
Install FOAMULAR-METRIC panels horizontally with tongues up, or with ship-lap draining to the outside, or with joints taped to repel infiltrating moisture.
A vapour retarder should be provided on or near the room side wall face. Framing within the wall should be insulated. Provision should be made inside the wall for the escape of condensate.
The curtain wall system should be detailed so that any water condensation or infiltration occurring within it will be collecTed and drained away via weeps to the exterior
All curtain wall systems require proper detailing and installation of continuous firestopping between the curtain wall and the edge of each floor.
INTERIOR WALL FURRING
Erect FOAMULAR-METRIC on concrete and/or block walls and fasten to substrate through a quality metal furring strip, spaced 600mm on centre max. with appropriate fasteners for systems specified.
PERIMETER AND FOUNDATION APPLICATIONS
Before backfilling, install FOAMULAR-METRIC to the exterior of all foundation walls, Adhere insulation to clean surfaces with long edges horizontal, edges tightly butted and vertical joints staggered. Secure insulation with small spots (approx. 50mm dia.) of adhesive applied 600mm on centre to backs of panels. Apply insulation to wall within 15 min. after applying adhesive. Back-fill carefully to minimize damage to insulation panels. Protective coating to exposed insulation above groundline should be applied. (Contact adhesive manufacturer for compatibility with polystyrene.)
MASONRY CAVITY WALL
Place insulation between wall ties with long edge horizontal and ends and edges butted. Install insulation against back-up wall allowing 25mm min. air space between insulation and outer wall. Cut insulation to fit tightly around all wall penetrations.
BELOW SLAB
Install FOAMULAR-METRIC after gravel fill has been built up to grade and thoroughly tamped, and vapor retarder placed. lay insulation in place with edges tightly butted and against foundation wall or other vertical insulation. Pour concrete slab to cover all insulation.
ROOFING
Remove dirt and debris from roof deck or old roofing, including loose or protruding pieces of existing roofing to insure that surface to receive insulation is clean, smooth and dry Apply only as much roof insulation as can be covered by the roof membrane and ballasted the same day.
Apply FOAMULAR-METRIC in parallel rows with end joints staggered. Install side and end joints closely without forcing. In two-layer application, apply second-layer panels parallel to first layer but stagger side end joints from first layer joints. Cut insulation to fit without forcing around penetrations and where roof deck meets vertical surfaces. For mechanically attached roof systems. use fasteners specified by SPR manufacturer.
SHEATHING FOAMULAR-METRIC panels are non-structural and must be installed only over adequately braced framing consistent with meeting job and service load conditions and code requirements.
Apply FOAMULAR-METRIC vertically (parallel to studs), with joints at studs. Close all joints tightly. Trim pieces of FOAMULAR-METRIC may be used, but such pieces shall be long enough to allow anchorage to at least two adjacent studs, or framing members. All areas of exterior walls requiring insulation shall be covered with FOAMULAR - METRIC.
In wood framing applications, sheathing should be fastened with large head staples or nails of length sufficient to penetrate framing members a minimum of 18mm. Maximum stud spacing is 600mm on centre In metal framing applications, fasten wafer head insulation screws at 300mm on centre to outside of braced framing.
To protect installed FOAMULAR-METRIC against damage, and discoloration due to exposure to sunlight, the exterior finish application should proceed as soon as practical following completion of sheathing application.
