Syphonic System Specification
Any design process requires information to initiate the design activity and generates information as part of that design. This influences the interfaces and success of the enterprise. In the case of Syphonic Systems, this information is of a complex nature.
Presently, standards or codes of practice governing Syphonic Systems are not available. The interchange of information is achieved by the creation of project specific specifications. These address the criteria essential to the successful conclusion of the development of a syphonic system for a building.
In assessing what to include in these specifications, an appreciation of the principles and interfaces of syphonic systems is crucial to the success of the design.
In case of syphonic systems three interfaces can be identified:
- The roof
- The building
- The underground drainage
The roof interface determines the majority of the input design information for the Syphonic System designer, the required information being:
- The roof area
- The roof construction
- The rainfall intensity
Key factors which must be considered when incorporating the syphonic outlet into a gutter or roof construction are:
- Jointing
- Location
- Compatibility
- Protection
The building interface needs an interchange of information. Details required by the syphonic design are:
- The height of the building
- Indication of preferred pipe routing
- Environmental conditions inside the building
- Indication of preferred piping material
- Location of any expansion provision
Factors arising from the Syphonic System design, which may have an impact on the building, are:
- The weight of the piping system when full
- Proposed routing of pipework
- Piping system support and restraint locations
- Discharge rate to in-ground systems
