Standard flexible sheet vinyl techniques are used. Take care to follow Altro's instructions for welding and detailing in wet areas.
Preparation of sub-floors
Sub-floors must be dry, sound and free from dust and grease. The floor must be smooth and level.
The requirements of British Standards Code of Practice BS 8203 and international equivalents are relevant. Direct-to-earth sub-floors must incorporate an efficient damp-proof membrane. If not, a surface dampproof membrane must be applied.
Adhesives
A complete range of adhesives is supplied by Altro.
- Under normal conditions use acrylic adhesive*
- For vertical surfaces use a contact adhesive
- In areas subject to extreme cleaning, temperature changes, or where considerable quantities of liquids will be in contact with the floor for long periods, use epoxy or polyurethane adhesive.
- Use conductive adhesive with static dissipative floor covering.
DETAILING
General
For 40 years Altro safety flooring has been used successfully as a continuous vinyl membrane. Special detailing techniques have been developed to ensure success. Comprehensive information is in the publication 'Essential Information for Flooring Contractors
Altro safety flooring'. Welding All joints should be hot-welded, using a hot air welding gun and Altro welding rod. Sealing All exposed edges should be sealed to prevent any moisture from penetrating the sub-floor. Where
Altro Special Resin Adhesive is used, this will act as sealant in certain circumstances. Where pipes or equipment fittings protrude through the safety floor or where it butts up to the metal edges of gullies or mat wells etc., a 3 mm gap should be left for filling with the Altroseal mastic.
CLEANING
Altro safety flooring can be cleaned by the simplest eco-friendly methods, using the minimum of labour and floor maintenance chemicals.
Recommended cleaning methods and chemicals are in Altro's Maintenance Guide, available on request.
As in any area where hygiene and safety are important, regular maintenance should be carried out. There are two simple stages:
- applying hot water, chemical cleaner and agitation to the floor surface to loosen did and suspend it in the water + chemical solution.
- removing the dirty water.
Frequency and intensity of cleaning depends on the situation. Please consult Altro's Guide to Cleaning.
Some materials are known to have possible staining or other effect on vinyl floors. Typical of these are: asphalt and bitumen, wet cardboard/ hardboard, transfer dyes from printed literature, certain types of rubber trolley wheels, tyres, organic dyes, floor cleaners containing pine oil (use only recommended cleaners).
If you have any concern about possible staining risks, consult with your Altro distributor and/or obtain a copy of the 'Altro Chemical Resistance Guide' which is available free of charge.
