Adshel Infrastructure, in partnership with the SA Government, recently completed the largest and most significant infrastructure project of the last 20 years in Adelaide to deliver five 20m walkway shelters along the new tram extension on North Terrace and King William Street, Adelaide.
The walkway shelters have been developed to reflect Adelaide’s commitment to environmental sustainability as a ‘Solar City’, with modular solar panels integrated into the roof structure. The shelters have been designed with strong linear quality, ensuring they enhance rather than impede the current urban landscape and provide protection from the sun, wind and rain. The glass roof panels provide shading for commuters through the use of tinting treatments and the vertical glass panels placed adjacent to the seats provide oncoming wind protection.
The walkway’s central beam acts as a visual anchor for the cantilevered roof struts as well as housing recessed solar powered lighting and signage, all of which serve to provide a comfortable environment for users. The size of the beam allows for two widely spaced posts, maximising platform surface for commuters.
The shelter’s design adapts to both the 3.5m and 4.2m wide platforms by extending the roof overhang where the wider platforms are located. The walkway shelter is modular in construction and able to be adapted to meet the needs of various platform configurations including the ability to function as a single sided shelter if needed in narrow streets.
Shane Watkins, General Manager of Adshel Infrastructure, says, “Adshel are proud to be part of Adelaide’s biggest infrastructure project in the last twenty years. The Adelaide tram Walkway development is one of Adshel’s most significant projects to date and provides Adelaide with a world class, environmentally savvy, long term shelter solution for the community”. |
